English: of uncertain origin, not used before the 20th century It is possibly a coinage intended to mean ‘supplicant, postulant’, from Late Latin petulāre to ask, or there may be some connection with the flower name petunia. Alternatively, it may be an elaboration of the vocabulary word pet used as a term of endearment, with the suffix -ula abstracted from names such as Ursula.
